The cable car service connecting Sarajevo to the nearby Mt. Trebević reopened on Friday, after undergoing a lengthy restoration project on what had been one of the city's best known landmarks before its destruction during the 1991-95 war.
The first passengers on the restored Trebević cable car were the Dutch-Swiss nuclear physicist and philantropist Edmond Offerman and his wife Maja, a native of Sarajevo. Offerman had donated 3.8 million Swiss francs for the project to help rebuild the service he first rode when he visited the city and enjoyed its scenic vistas in the early 1990s.
The original cable car opened in 1959 and had 50 four-person cabins running along a route from the Sarajevo old town to the nearby Mt. Trebević, before it was destroyed in 1992. The new cable car service, which took more than ten years to rebuild, features much larger ten-seat cabins and can traverse the same route in seven minutes.
A return ticket for the scenic ride will cost €3 for locals, and €10 for tourists.
