79 illegal migrants arrested in Slovenia this weekend

Four illegal migrants were found hidden in a cargo truck with Serbian licence plates at the Obrezje/Bregana border crossing between Slovenia and Croatia during the night between Sunday and Monday, the Slovenian police said.

The migrants were handed over to the Croatian police.

The police in the Slovenian border towns of Metlika and Crnomelj said they had discovered and detained 75 illegal migrants over the weekend, who were identified as nationals of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Algeria, Syria, Morocco, India, and Tunisia. They were put up in a centre for asylum seekers after formally requesting international protection.

The police believe the migrants entered Slovenia by swimming across the River Kupa, or crossing it at shallow points.

Scores of illegal migrants have entered the country that way in the last few months, but the Slovenian Interior Ministry said they have things under control and that the situation is nowhere near as critical as it was during mass-scale migrations along the Balkan route in 2016/2017.
