May 2018 unemployment rate drops to 9.2 percent

In May 2018, there were a little over 1.40 million persons employed in Croatia, up by 2 percent from April, of which 1.19 million were employed in companies, or 1.5 percent up, the national statistics bureau said on Wednesday.

The figure includes 200,000 Croatians who are self-employed or craftsmen, which is 5 percent up from the previous month.

In year-on-year terms, the number of persons employed in companies was unchanged in May.

Out of 19 groups of professions classified and tracked by the state statistics bureau, the number of employees dropped in four, with the largest drop, by 0.7 percent in mining and energy extraction.

On the other hand, the number of employed grew the most in accomodation services and food preparation and serving, by 16.3 percent.

At the end of May, there were nearly 142,000 jobless persons registered with the state employment bureau, down by 17,800 or 11.1 percent from April. As a result, May’s unemployment rate fell to 9.2 percent from 10.4 percent in April.
