Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic arrived in Brussels ahead of a two-day EU summit meeting, where he met with Janez Jansa, leader of the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS).
The centre-right SDS was the largest party in the parliamentary election in Slovenia earlier this month, and Jansa is now in the process of finding coalition partners to form a government.
Slovenia is planning to file a lawsuit against Croatia at the European Union’s Court of Justice in Luxembourg after the new government is formed over a Croatia’s refusal to implement the arbitration border decision.
Plenkovic and Jansa participated in the Europan People’s Party (EPP) meeting which traditionally takes place before each EU summit, and discussed the border dispute.
“We are prepared to negotiate with our Slovenian friends to find the solution to this long-unresolved issue through diplomatic and bilateral means. I told the SDS leader Janez Jansa the same thing today, and I hope the new government will be formed in Slovenia soon because we are ready to negotiate again,” Plenkovic said.
Slovenia is claiming that Croatia is in breach of EU law by refusing to implement the arbitration ruling determining the land and sea borders between the two countries, which was reached in June 2017.
Croatia does not recognise the arbitration decision and has withdrawn from the process in 2015 because of a scandal which involved leaked tapes showing Slovenian government official discussing the case with the court’s judge.
Earlier this month, the European Commission refused to take a stance on the matter, opting to remain a neutral observer.
