Payment cards continue to be popular in Croatia, and some 73 percent of people use contactless payment, compared to four years ago when only 10 percent of people used this method, showed the research conducted by Mastercard and GfK market research centre on the use of financial services.

The online research was conducted in May on some 1,000 banking services users in Croatia, aged between 18 and 55, 95 percent of whom said that they pay with cards several times a month, while they only use cash payments for smaller amounts.

Some 85 percent of those polled said they shop online, mostly clothes (60 percent), while more than 60 percent, particularly those under the age of 40 and those with monthly income above 9,000 kuna (€1,216) said they wanted to use mobile payment.

“Text message payments are still the most common type of mobile payment, and some 50 percent people still mostly use their mobile phones to check on their account balance and credit card spending, as well as mobile banking,” Mastercard said.

They added that more than a half of people polled said they were not interested in more innovative payment methods, such as mobile applications and the like.

There was a sharp spike in contactless payment, from 10 percent to 73 percent in the last four years. It is mostly used by people with monthly wages of 12,000 kuna (€1,620) or more, and those living in northern Croatia, Istria and the coastal regions.

Contactless payment is most common in supermarkets (65 percent), followed by local shops (14 percent) and gas stations (9 percent), and people polled said they wished it was available in more places, such as restaurants and bars or public transport.

The research showed that the people increasingly pay their water, electricity, gas, and other bills online, with some 50 percent using online banking, and some 40 percent mobile banking. Only 22 percent of those polled pay their bills in post offices.
