The Croatian seaman kidnapped in Nigeria has been freed and is on his way home, the Seafarers' Union of Croatia (SPH) said on Sunday.

Twelve of the 19 crew members of the Swiss cargo ship Glarus were kidnapped over a month ago by Nigerian pirates 45 nautical miles off Bonny Island in the Niger Delta. Seven of the kidnapped crew were Filipinos and one national each from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Ukraine and Romania.

The Glarus was transporting wheat from Lagos to Port Harcourt.

The SPH said it was in contact with the Croat seaman’s family and that they agreed not to release more information about the case for now.

Since the incident, the SPH was in contact with the Swiss seafarers’ union and the Swiss Massoel Shipping company, attempting to free the kidnapped seamen.
