Last year, 36,556 children were born in Croatia and 53,477 people died, the most frequent causes of death being cardiovascular diseases and tumours, according to data from the Croatian Health Statistics Yearbook issued by the Croatian Public Health Institute.

Last year, 16,921 more people died than were born.

In 2017, a total of 36,104 births were registered, with 36,584 liveborn and 149 stillborn children and 75 infants dying within the first seven days of life. Most of the mothers of newborns were in the 30-34 and 25-29 age groups. It was the first delivery for 37.8 percent, second delivery for 39.3 percent, third delivery for 15.5 percent, and fourth delivery or more for 7.6 percent of women.

Last year, 6,141 abortions were reported, a further decline from 2016 when 6,904 abortions were performed.

Of the total number of women who chose their gynaecologist in primary health care, only 549,589 or 31.7 percent used their services.

In 2017, a total of 35,671 preventive breast examinations were performed, of which 9.5 percent revealed pathological results. That was a decline from 2016 when 13.7 percent of such results were recorded.
