Former Downing Street advisor for N1: Labour has to get rid of Corbyn

Days after the high-stakes December 12 general election in Britain, which saw Boris Johnson’s Tories win the largest Conservative majority since the Thatcher era, former advisor to Prime Minister Theresa May, James Johnson, talked to N1’s Domagoj Novokmet about what the election results mean for the political scene in Britain, but also for the process of Brexit.

“Certainly, the polls were pointing in the direction of a Conservative majority, but I think people are surprised that it’s quite so big,” Johnson said. “It is a profoundly good result for Boris Johnson, but more than that, it is a personal result for him.”

Labour performance was “worst ever,” said Johnson. “If you look, throughout the campaign, at the amount of the interviews people have done outside London, up in the north and in the Midlands, it was pretty clear that voters were abandoning Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour.”

Corbyn is the main issue for Labour, he said. “If you look at the polls, going back to 1970s… Jeremy Corbyn is the most unpopular leader of the opposition to ever go into an election. He has to own that.”

“It does look like, if they can get rid of Jeremy Corbyn and make a shift to a credible leader, they may be able to challenge the Conservatives again,” he said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would have a trade deal with the EU ready by the end of 2020, a prediction which Brussels called unrealistic. James Johnson, however, said the Prime Minister should not be underestimated.

“Everybody also said he wouldn’t be able to renegotiate a deal! The reality is, with this majority Boris Johnson can do what he likes,” he said.
