Renew Europe MEPs called for the appointment of a special European Union envoy for the Western Balkans, the Beta news agency said on Wednesday.
The European Parliament group said the envoy would be accountable to both the EU High Representative Josep Borell and Neighbourhood and Enlargement Commissioner Ooliver Varhelyi. The group’s document titled A credible EU perspective for the Western Balkans said that the envoy would focus on the long-term problems in the region.
Borell wrote in an opinion piece for the Project Syndicate portal that “diplomacy cannot succeed unless it is backed by action”. “If we want the Western Balkans to succeed on the path of reconciliation and reform, we need to offer a credible EU accession process delivering incremental benefits,” he wrote.
