An executive in charge of EU projects in Velika Gorica's water supply company, Katarina Gasparac, and Zvonko Maras of the Solarna Tehnologija company are expected to be released from custody on Wednesday after they admitted their responsibility in the JANAF corruption case.

Zagreb County Court confirmed to Hina that the two suspects would be released in the course of the day.

Unofficial reports say that Tomislav Jelisavec, director of the Velika Gorica Vodoopskrba water supply company, was the first to plead guilty in the case on Monday, after which he was released from custody.

According to those reports, Jelisavec and Gasparac admitted having been instructed by Velika Gorica mayor Drazen Barisic of the HDZ party to fix a public tender for the construction of a wastewater purification plant to favour the Elektrocentar company of Kreso Petek, the main suspect in the case.

The project, estimated at HRK 97 million, was awarded to Petek for a price of HRK 148 million.

Maras’s company Solarna Tehnologija was in a consortium with Petek’s company.

According to sources close to the investigation, five more suspects in the JANAF case are willing to plead guilty.

The investigation into the JANAF scandal, conducted by the Office for Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), covers 13 people suspected of influence peddling, bribery, illicit preferential treatment and abuse of office and aiding and abetting in these crimes.

Among the suspects are also former JANAF oil pipeline operator CEO Dragan Kovacevic and the Social Democrat Mayor of Nova Gradiska, Vinko Grgic.
