Labour and Pension System Minister Josip Aladrovic said on Thursday that the number of inspectors who would check retirement and nursing homes had been doubled and that there would be zero tolerance to irregularities in those facilities.
We have already doubled the number of inspectors, and we are going to step up inspections so as to correct all illogical things in the system, Aladrovic said.
We will not tolerate any increase in the number of beneficiaries above the capped capacity norms, he said ahead of the first meeting of the National Council for Pensioners and Senior Citizens.
These comments ensued after a fire in a senior home in Dugi Rat near Split claimed the two lives this past Sunday. The capacity of that home is 20 beneficiaries, however, there were 23 beneficiaries when the accident happened.
In early January, six beneficiaries lost their lives in a fire in the Andrasevac nursing home in northern Croatia.
Those tragedies seem also to be a trigger to plan amending the relevant legislation and Aladrovic announced new rules on capping the maximum number of beneficiaries in homes so as to provide them with appropriate care.
