Ognjen Vukmirovic of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) was elected deputy head of Sibenik-Knin County from the ranks of the Serb minority at an early election on Sunday.
Vukmirovic received nearly 90 percent of votes, while his rival, Ilija Krneta of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) won 8.7 percent.
Turnout was low, with only 23.9 percent of the 9,680 voters registered taking part in the election. Thirty-five ballots, or 1.5 percent, were declared invalid.
The election was called early because former deputy county head Anja Simpraga (SDSS) had resigned after becoming a member of the national parliament.
Sibenik-Knin County head Goran Pauk has three deputies. Their terms, including that of Vukmirovic, end in May next year when regular local elections are due.
