An investigating judge on Thursday decided that Osijek judges Zvonko Vekic and Ante Kvesic, as well as businessman Drago Tadic, should be remanded in custody, while judge Darko Kruslin was released pending further proceedings in an investigation prompted by accusations made by former Dinamo football club boss and fugitive Zdravko Mamic who claimed he had bribed the judges concerned to clear him of the charges of embezzlement of money from that sport club. The investigating judge also did not rule to place in custody the other two suspects in the case, the brothers Zdravko and Zoran Mamic, who have fled to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A prosecutor said after Thursday’s hearing that the investigating judge dismissed the motion to place the Mamic brothers in custody because warrants for their arrest had already been issued and custody had been set in other cases against them.

Vekic was remanded in custody due to the risk of witness tampering while Kvesic was remanded in custody due to the risk that he could repeat the crime he is charged with. Osijek businessman Drago Tadic was remanded in custody for the same reason but also due to the risk that he could flee because along with Croatian citizenship, he also holds Bosnia and Herzegovina citizenship.
The Office for Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) said it would appeal against the judge’s decision to dismiss its motion to set detention also for Judge Kruslin, while defence counsel for the other two judges said they expected their clients to be released soon as well.
Earlier in the day, without revealing their identities, USKOK said that it had launched an investigation into the six men on suspicion of taking and giving nearly €500,000 in bribes, influence peddling, and giving bribes in exchange for influence peddling.
