State Attorney Office in the eastern Croatian city of Osijek issued an indictment against national football team captain and Real Madrid star Luka Modric on charges of perjury on Friday (March 2).

Modric has been under investigation since June 2017 after he gave conflicting testimony at the trial of Zdravko Mamic, the boss of his former club Dinamo Zagreb. Mamic, who is on trial for tax evasion and siphoning some 116 million kuna (15.5 million euros) of club funds

In 2015, Modric told anti-corruption investigators that an annex to his first contract at Dinamo in 2004 – allowing Mamic to divert funds from transfer fees – was signed only after he had stopped playing for Dinamo and moved abroad to English club Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.

In his court testimony in 2017, Modric said that the annex was signed in 2004, and later extended every time along with his contract extension, contradicting his original statement.
