Following years-long investigation by the Croatian police, Osijek state attorney office filed charges against a 45 year old Serbian citizen suspected of taking part in torture and killings of prisoners and civilians taken from Vukovar hospital after the fall of the eastern Croatian town in November 1991.
The police claimed that the suspect, still at large, took part in killing seven civilians in the neighborhood of Sajmište, and torture of prisoners at the nearby agricultural compound Ovčara, including the French national Jean-Michel Nicolier, whose remains still have not been found. At the time, he was a member of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA).
“Considering that the suspect is a Serbian national, and at large, the Croatian police will, in cooperation with criminal prosecutors in Croatia and abroad, intensify their efforts to locate and arrest the suspect in order to bring him to trial in Croatia,” the press release from the interior ministry said.
