Croatia records 1.36 million employed in March 2018

In March this year Croatia had little over 1.36 million employed people, or 0.4 percent up from February, state statistics bureau said on Wednesday.

The figure includes 1.16 million employed in companies, or 0.3 percent up from February, and 182,000 people employed as freelance professionals, or 1.5 percent up from February.

By business sector, monthly employment levels fell in five out of 19 sectors tracked, with the largest drop in the tourist and hospitality industry, where it fell by 2.8 percent, to a total of 54,100 employees. On the other hand, the biggest rise was in administrative services, by 1.5 percent, to 41,000 employees.

In year-on-year terms, 10 out of 19 sectors recorded lower number of people employed, with biggest drops in mining (4.1 percent), and heating, cooling and fuel supply (3.9 percent).The biggest increase year-on-year was in the sector of public administration, defence and social security (3.9 percent), which employed a total of 106,000 people in March.

The biggest single sector in terms of number of people employed is still manufacturing, with companies in the sector totalling 208,500 employees, down by 1.2 percent from March 2017. 

According to data compiled by the state employment bureau, 178,000 Croatians were registered as unemployed in March 2018, down by 20.6 percent compared to the same month the year before.

The registered unemployment rate in March was 11.5 percent, or 2.6 percentage points down from March 2017.
