Social Democrats call for withdrawal of bill on LNG terminal

Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader and MP Davor Bernardic on Friday called on the government to withdraw its bill on constructing the floating terminal for liquefied natural gas on the northern Adriatic island of Krk, dubbed Lex LNG, and thus "put, at least once, public interest before the interests of individual lobbies."

Bernardic made the statement in Parliament, which was voting on Friday on 380 amendments submitted to the bill.

This includes 360 amendments submitted by the Social Democrats designed to obstruct the passing of the bill, in protest over the ruling majority’s decision to reject a motion to give the bill two readings instead of discussing it under fast-track procedure.

We wanted to warn the public, as well as those in charge, that the consequences of the project, not only for the national economy, but also for the environment, and especially the sea, cannot be foreseen, Bernardic told Parliament.

He reiterated that both the residents of the island of Krk, where the floating LNG terminal is to be built, and SDP , support a land-based LNG terminal instead, considering it as more development-oriented, environmentally acceptable, and with a building site permit already approved.

SDP MPs then went on to play in Parliament the audio recordings of some 100 locals commenting on why the proposed bill is bad, prompting Speaker of Parliament, Gordan Jandrokovic (HDZ), to call a break to check if this was in line with Parliament rules.

Other parties who also submitted amendments to the bill were the Most party and the Zivi Zid party.
