Liberal tripartite Amsterdam Coalition creaks over shipyards

The Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) will first tackle and decide on the status of their MEP Ivan Jakovcic, and after that they will discuss this topic with their partners, IDS leader Boris Miletic said on Friday following a statement from the non-parliamentary liberal Pametno party which announced its withdrawal from the Amsterdam Coalition.

Pametno said they would withdraw from the informal group of three liberal parties – the remaining one being parliamentary party Glas – over the problems at the ailing Uljanik shipyard, and particularly because of the responsibility of some prominent individuals, alluding to Jakovcic – a long-time former leader of the regionalist IDS party and now their MEP.

Pametno said that they find it unacceptable that Jakovcic, a prominent IDS official and one of the 11 Croatian members of the European Parliament, had received commissions from a company owned by businessman Danko Koncar, who was later selected to be a strategic partner in the ailing Uljanik Group in Pula in March.

“We call for an end to spending money public money on irresponsible and murky dealings of individuals and interest groups,” they said in their statement.

This prompted leader of IDS, Boris Miletic, to say that Pametno should also define its attitude on Istria, and criticised Pametno for not seeing Istria as a separate region in its plan for the administrative re-organisation of Croatia.

“I am sorry about these developments. Although we share the same values, we, obviously, do not value the same culture of dialogue,” Miletic said, reassuring the public that the IDS would definitely make the right decision about Jakovcic soon.

Leaders of Pametno and two parliamentary parties: the Civil Liberal Alliance (Glas) and the Istrian Democratic Party (IDS), had met in January this year to agree to a liberal tripartite coalition.

They were dubbed the Amsterdam Coalition by the media, because they originally agreed to their cooperation in the Dutch capital.
