A total of 53,477 people died in Croatia in 2017, with the most common causes of death being cardiovascular diseases (23,500) and malignant diseases, which killed a little under 14,000 people last year, the Croatian Public Health Institute reported on Friday.
The third most common cause of death among Croats were respiratory system diseases (3,139), followed by injuries and poisoning (2,694) and digestive system diseases (2,255), the Institute reported.
In 2017, not one woman died during pregnancy, birth or postpartum complications.
According to gender, the number of women who died in 2017 is higher than the number of men, particularly in the age group of 65 and older, while the number of men who died in 2017 is higher in the age group of 64 and younger.
A total of 2,694 violent deaths were recorded in Croatia in 2017.
