The Croatian government on Thursday decided to initiate the procedure to conclude the associate membership agreement with the prestigious European Organisation for Nuclear Research (Cern).

The Geneva-based research centre, established in 1954 by the European Council for Nuclear Research, operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world, as well as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a major underground test site on the French-Swiss border.

Associate member status will give Croatia the opportunity to participate in Cern-funded projects on an equal footing with members of the organisation. It will improve the quality of education and research by Croatian scientists, as well as increase the mobility of scientists and specialists.

Such status will also open up business opportunities for Croatian software, construction, electrical engineering, and healthcare companies.

Croatia will contribute a total of 1 million Swiss francs (€887,200) annually to finance Cern activities.

In December 2018, Serbia joined Cern – the only ex-Yugoslav country so far with full membership. Slovenia became an associate member in 2017.
