Fresh anti-government protest despite heavy snow in Serbian capital

Heavy snow and the cold did not prevent thousands of people from gathering in central Belgrade for another #1of5Million (#1od5miliona) weekly anti-government protest.

The regular Saturday protest was held for the eighth time. The crowd was addressed by Supreme Court Judge Zoran Ivosevic and Belgrade University Professor Cedomir Cupic who told the crowd that “Aleksandar Vucic has turned rule of law into rule of willfulness, the government into a personal obedient service and parliament into a voting machine which is tasked with legalizing his willfulness”.

Judge Ivosevic called for Vucic’s immediate resignation as Serbian president so that Serbia could become a state ruled by law.

The crowd marched down what is now known as the Route of Demands by 1in5Million – past the Politika newspaper, Serbian state TV (RTS) building and to the Serbian government headquarters with what the organizers called mini-performances in front of the newspaper and RTS and speeches in front of the government building.

The protesters taped shut the doors of the Politika newspaper and RTS with tape reading Censored.

The RTS aired a two minute report on the protest, including the mini-performances, towards the end of its main evening news.

Similar gatherings were held in other cities and towns across the country.

The Belgrade protest included a minor incident when members of a group calling itself Left Block had a verbal exchange with the group United Facemasks Movement who wear white balaclava helmets. The Left Block does not take part in the protests but a small number of them gather in one place along the protest march route.

The protests have won the support of teaching staff and associates at several Belgrade University and some private university schools and some of their counterparts in Novi Sad.
