Maksimir Park, a landmark of the Croatian capital city, is organising celebrations on 13-15 September to commemorate the 225th anniversary of its establishment by Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac.

The central event of the celebrations will be a concert to be performed by pianist Zvjezdan Ruzic at 1930 hrs on Saturday by Drugo Jezero Lake.

The park, which covers 316 hectares, opened its doors officially to visitors in 1794.

At the time, Maksimir was the second European park opened for the general public, Deputy Mayor Jelena Pavicevic Vukicevic said in Zagreb on Wednesday while presenting the programme of the celebrations.

She explained that in the 18th century most parks were within estates owned by the nobility, and therefore opening Maksimir Park for the general public was actually a new phenomenon.

The events within the 13-15 September programme are free of charge, and are organised by the Maksimir Park Public Institution.
