The situation in the overcrowded Vucjak accommodation camp for irregular migrants outside the northwestern Bosnian town of Bihac is drastically deteriorating, forcing the local Red Cross to withdraw its volunteers from the facility for security reasons.

Local media outlets on Thursday quoted Red Cross secretary in Bihac, Selam Midzic, as saying that the camp’s capacity was 800-1000 people, however, after the local police moved all illegal migrants from the town into the camp, it is currently catering for about 2,400 migrants.

Food stocks can last for only three to four days, provided that migrants are given only one meal a day, he explained.

The only volunteers who have until now been engaged in providing food and other assistance in the camp are from the Red Cross.

The European Union has refused the use of its funds for the Vucjak camp explaining that the centre has no adequate conditions for accommodating migrants. It has no running water and electricity, and migrants sleep in tents.
