More than 300,000 tons of food is thrown away by Croatian households annually, while at the same time organisations try to incite solidarity with the hundreds of hungry and homeless people.

The findings of a recently published survey in the Waste Management journal confirmed data which said that 75 kg of food is being thrown away in Croatia per capita on average annually. In Europe, 92 kg are thrown away annually per capita on average.

The survey was conducted in 2017, covering 115 Croatian households.

Researcher Branka Ilakovac said households account for 77 percent of the 380,000 tons of food waste in Croatia, while in Europe they account for little more than 50 percent.

Eighty-eight million tons of food is thrown away in Europe and about 1.3 tons billion worldwide.
