The Initiative against police violence and racism held a protest in Zagreb on Tuesday to express solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and protests across the United States, following the death of unarmed African American George Floyd.
“We refuse to participate in the policy of the destruction of lives. We want to be part of the policy of solidarity, the fight for freedom and economic equality and a society that condemns all forms of violence and racist supremacy,” the initiative said.
Approximately 400 people gathered for the protest in Zagreb.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. White police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down in the street, begging for his life and repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe.”
