Two residents of the family-run Providenca nursing home in the southern coastal town of Dugi Rat, near Split, died in a fire on Sunday evening, police confirmed.
One of the residents was taken to hospital in Split for smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out in a first-floor room, prompting the evacuation of 19 residents. According to unofficial sources, there were about 50 residents in the home when the fire broke out at 7.20pm.
Police spokeswoman Sanja Nazlic said that the evacuated residents had been moved to the ground floor.
About 30 local firefighters brought the fire under control around 8pm.
An investigation is under way.
