The Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development has decided in consultation with the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund to grant HRK 114.8 million (€15.3m) for remediation of Split's Karepovac municipal landfill, authorities in the southern coastal city said on Tuesday.
The City of Split said it had applied for an EU grant following a call for submission of project proposals under the operational programme Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014-2015 published in July 2020. The grant agreement is expected to be signed soon.
“The project is already under way. The first phase was completed in April, a month ahead of schedule, and was financed by the City of Split and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund. The EU funding is very important for the continuation of the remediation project and the integration of the waste management system of the Karepovac landfill until its closure,” said the Deputy Mayor of Split, Nino Vela.
The purpose of the project is to improve the quality of life in the Split area by reducing the harmful impact on the environment and human health and develop an environmentally-friendly integrated waste management system.
The remediation process will be carried out in seven phases and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
