Twelve Bosnian police agencies and the Coordination Committee for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons have destroyed 1,864 pieces of small arms with their parts and components in the Jelsingrad foundry in Banja Luka, UNDP in Bosnia said, Fena news agency reported Monday.

In this way, they reaffirmed Bosnia’s commitment to contributing to the international framework for arms control, the security of its citizens, as well as regional and international security and stability.

The arms were collected by police agencies through regular law enforcement activities, while a certain amount of weapons was voluntarily handed over by citizens, UNDP said.

According to the UN agency, this activity contributes to the Strategy for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Bosnia, but also to the implementation of the Regional Roadmap for the control of these weapons.

Since 2017, Bosnian authorities have destroyed over 18,500 small arms, light weapons with their parts and components, with the support of the EU, UNDP BIH and UNDP SEESAC.

This event was funded by the European Union (EU) through UNDP SEESAC, with the support of the UNDP office in the country, the UNDP concluded.
