Defence Minister Mario Banozic said on Wednesday on the occasion of Remembrance Day that a sense of reconciliation prevailed in Vukovar and that the participation of representatives of the Serb community would intensify efforts to search for persons gone missing in the Homeland War.
Many have died not knowing where closest family members are, and Banozic said that the government was working most intensively to find the disappeared.
“We can see that there are some changes. Today’s Remembrance Procession is led by a sense of reconciliation. Yesterday and today, representative of the Serb community are participating in the Rembembrance Procession for Vukovar victims and I think that (…) in the following period it will be much easier for us to get certain information,” Banozic said.
He expressed conviction that the government would make the unattainable attainable and would end its term with progress in efforts to find the disappeared.
Banozic told N1 television that the government had done a lot for Vukovar. He recalled that yesterday was exactly four years since the government held its first session outside Zagreb, in Vukovar. During one term, HRK 1.44 billion has been provided through 59 projects for infrastructure, roads and the enterprise sector of Vukovar, he added.
He said that the defence ministry was completing a project in the Vukovar barracks to move the entire logistics battalion of the armored mechanised guard brigade and thus help Vukovar. Also, in cooperation with other ministries they have provided housing for soldiers that will live in Vukovar.
