Two people were injured in a Monday morning explosion at a privately-owned water processing plant which left the northern Serbian city of Zrenjanin without drinking water for several hours.

Mayor Simo Salapura said that the two plant staff were taken to hospital, one with serious and the other with light injuries from the blast. He said that the waterworks communal services company had taken over the water supply system temporarily.

An N1 reporter in Zrenjanin said that firefighters and the police were at the water processing plant dealing with the aftermath of the blast. The reporter said that the authorities had not disclosed the cause of the blast. Plant manager Bojan Dimkic confirmed that an investigation was underway.

Unofficial reports said that the blast was caused by a chlorine leak.
