Bosnia's Presidency member, Sefik Dzaferovic, who attended the commemorative event in Croatia to mark the anniversary of the fall of Vukovar, said that the victims of the tragic events that took place in the town must be honoured while the perpetrators must face justice.
Croatia is commemorating the 30th anniversary of the collapse of the eastern Croatian town and the aggression by the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) and Serb paramilitary groups, in which 2,717 Croatian defenders and civilians were killed or went missing, while the city was nearly razed to the ground.
“I want to express my respect for the defenders of Vukovar and for the victims of the Greater Serbia aggression by participating in the Column of Remembrance for the Victims of Vukovar and laying flowers at the Memorial Cemetery. Victims deserve respect, justice, and criminals deserve punishment,” said Dzaferovic.
He added that all those responsible for what happened in Vukovar have still not faced justice.
“One should never give up until it is brought to an end. Still, although 30 years have passed, there are fresh images of the barbaric destruction, bombing and demolition of Vukovar,” he said.
He reminded that mass crimes were committed, and it all culminated with the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.
“This is a message for the whole world today, for today’s moments we are experiencing in the region. We need to react in time and deter evil in time,” he said.
