In 2020, a total of 36,084 new passenger vehicles were sold in Croatia, which was by 42.6% less than in 2019, the Promocija Plus agency reported on Tuesday.
In 2019, as many as 62,938 vehicles were sold in Croatia and in 2020, 26,854 fewer cars were sold.
The best-selling car brand was Volkswagen with 5,638 cars, or a 15.6% share.
Skoda came in second, with 4,862 cars sold and a share of 13.5%, and Renault followed with 3,095 cars or an 8.6% share. Dacia (2,213 cars or a 6.1% share) and Suzuki (1,851 cars or a 5.1% share) made the top five selling brands.
When it came to the car model, Skoda Octavia topped the list as 2,403 buyers opted for it in Croatia in 2020.
VW Polo with 1,276 cars and Renault Clio (1,246) made the top three car models.
Dacia Sandero and Dacia Duster followed.
Broken down by type of fuel, 54.9% of buyers opted for a petrol-fuelled car, while 34.8% bought diesel cars, 6.9% bought hybrids, 2% bought gas vehicles and 1.5% bought electric vehicles.
