The Croatian coat-of-arms, a geographical map of Croatia, the marten (Croatian: kuna), the Glagolitic script and the image of Nikola Tesla are motifs proposed for the Croatian side of euro coins, the Croatian central bank (HNB) announced on Wednesday.

The bank’s Currency Committee presented on Wednesday the final proposal for motifs on national sides of future Croatian euro coins. The motifs will be discussed by the National Council for the Introduction of the Euro, after which the government will adopt the conclusion.

The Croatian coat-of-arms will be used as a background on all coins, while the other motifs will be used on coins of different value. The 2 euro coin will feature a geographical map of Croatia and the 1 euro coin will feature the marten. The 50, 20, and 10 cent coins will feature the image of the Croatian-born physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla, while the 1, 2, and 5 cent coins will show the Glagolitic script.

Nearly 50,000 Croatians took part in an online survey at euro.hr, where they could rate suggestions or put in their own. This rating, as well as a structured national survey on a sample of 1,000 people influenced the Committee’s final decision.

Based on the selected and confirmed motifs, the HNB bill announce a tender for the design of the coins and, in mid-October, the bank will send the design to the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, the HNB said in a press release.

The production of the coins is expected to begin at least six months before the currency is introduced in Croatia, after the decision of the Council of the EU that Croatia is introducing the euro.
