The Croatian Psychological Chamber said on Monday that an inspection at the Social Welfare Centre in the town of Nova Gradiska showed that the psychologists in charge of the case of a 2-year-old child who recently died of injuries caused by domestic violence had acted in line with professional standards.

"After extensive documentation was examined and interviews were conducted, it was determined that the psychologists acted in line with professional standards and measures defined by the Social Welfare Centre," the association said.

The Croatian Psychological Chamber had launched the inspection at the request of the Social Welfare Ministry after the violent death of the two-year-old girl, who had been under the supervision of the Social Welfare Centre in Nova Gradiska.
The girl had been staying with a foster family, but the centre had decided to allow her return to her biological family late last year.

After the child's death in early April, the director of the Nova Gradiska Social Welfare Centre, Branko Medunic, was replaced.

The findings of an inspection into the work of social workers involved in the case are expected soon.
