A former police IT expert, Franjo Varga, and Blaz Curic, a former driver for former agriculture minister Tomislav Tolusic, were found guilty on Thursday by Osijek County Court for their involvement in the text message scandal. Varga was senteced to 3.5 years in prison, while Curic was handed a two-year sentence.
Varga was charged with obstruction of justice in extradition proceedings against former Agrokor owner Ivica Todoric, who fled to Great Britain during an investigation into him.
The Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) alleged that Varga had created fake text messages, including for former football mogul Zdravko Mamic, and that Curic warned Varga that he was under investigation.
The two defendants were not today present in the court for the sentence-hearing session. The ruling is subject to appeal.
During the trial, former Agrokor owner Todoric and former Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko were some of the witnesses who gave their testimonies before the court, while Zdravko Mamic testified via video link from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he had fled to on the eve of being convicted of siphoning money from the Dinamo Zagreb football club.
