Revenues of retail grocery stores in Croatia exceeded HRK 40 billion in 2020, increasing by HRK 306 million compared with 2019, according to figures from the Croatian Competition Agency.

The agency carried out a regular annual survey of the retail distributive trade, mostly in food, drinks and household hygiene products, on a sample of 51 representative retailers. It showed that this market experienced a slight growth trend despite the coronavirus pandemic and the partial lockdown of the economy in 2020.

The revenues of the 51 grocery retailers covered by the survey exceeded HRK 40 billion in 2020, an increase of HRK 306 million compared with 2019 when they had reached HRK 2.25 billion, up by 6% over 2018.

Last year these retailers operated a total of 4,707 stores, which was 14, or 0.3%, more than in 2019.

The largest grocery retailer was Konzum Plus, with a market share of between 20 and 30%, a slight decrease compared with 2019. In 2020 it operated 608 stores.

Members of the Schwarz Group continued to see increases in revenues, albeit lower than in 2019. Lidl saw a rise in revenues from grocery sales, controlling 10-20% of the market. Another member of the group, Kaufland, also recorded a rise in revenues and in the market share to 5-10%. Both members of the Schwarz Group had a combined market share of between 20 and 30% in 2020.

Plodine, Spar and Tommy had market shares of between 5 and 10%.
