Only three cities in Croatia - Zagreb, Split and Rijeka - have more than 100,000 inhabitants, show the first results of the 2021 census, published by the national statistical office (DZS) on Friday.
Zagreb has the most residents – 769,944, Split has 161,312 residents and Rijeka 108,622.
In all the three cities the number of residents has dropped in the past ten years.
Compared to the 2011 census, Zagreb has lost around 20,000 inhabitants, as many as Rijeka, while Split has lost around 16,000 residents.
The fourth biggest city in the country, according to the last census, is Osijek, with 96,848 inhabitants. Zadar follows with 70,782 residents, while the sixth largest city is Bjelovar, with 67,600 residents, followed by Velika Gorica, with 61,198 residents.
According to the latest census, only eight Croatian cities have more than 50,000 inhabitants.
