Passenger transport, affected by the pandemic, drops 42 percent in 2020

In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic markedly affected passenger transport in Croatia, which dropped 42.1 percent on the year, while cargo transport saw a 0.3 percent increase, the country's statistics bureau said on Wednesday.

Last year 48.7 million passengers were transported and all types of passenger transport recorded decreases – 13.1 million were transported by rail (-33.9%), 26.2 million by road (-44.2%) and 9.8 million by sea (-42.1%).

The sharpest drop was recorded in air transport, 70.3 percent, with only 675,000 passengers transported.

As for cargo, 123.3 million tonnes were transported in 2020, up 0.3% on 2019. Cargo transport by rail went up 3.8% to almost 15 million tonnes, river transport went up 16.3% to 948,000 tonnes and pipeline transport by 11.5% to almost 9.3 million tonnes.

Cargo transport by road, on the other hand, decreased by 0.5% to 80.7 million tonnes, maritime transport dropped by 4.9% to 17.4 million tones and cargo transport by air fell by 31.5% to 1,000 tonnes.
