Actors dressed as Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, his wife, Duchess of Hohenberg Sophie, as well as their assassin, Gavrilo Princip, were part of a performance in downtown Sarajevo on Monday, marking the anniversary of the assassination which led to World War I.

On June 28, 1914, a member of the Young Bosnia movement, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, as well as his pregnant wife in Sarajevo, as part of an effort to end Austro-Hungarian rule.

Actor Deni Mesic, who portrayed Princip, said that the performance has the goal to promote Bosnia’s history and culture.

“I don’t want to go into whether Gavrilo was good or bad, we want to present our rich history. That is our goal, and to attract tourists to see our city because we have a lot to offer,” he said.

Fatima Kazazic-Obad, who portrayed Sophie, said she is happy to play the role.

“All the people waved and smiled as we passed. Maybe everyone has their own political position on what happened, but it’s nice to learn about history,” she said.

The Archduke was portrayed by Filip Radovanovic.

“It is wonderful for Sarajevo that it decided to support this project and offer something to the people who come, to show them the history of this city and country. We are characters who have marked world history and we let people judge for themselves how they want to perceive them,” he said.
