Speaking to the press, Plenkovic said he was honouring “first and foremost the Croatian defenders, police officers, soldiers who gave their lives for Croatia’s freedom.”

He said this was an occasion to remember a unique time in Croatian history under the visionary leadership of Croatia’s first president Franjo Tudjman. “It’s up to us to cultivate all this freedom and all the achievements of the past 30 years.”

One of the most important tasks is strengthening the Croatian Army, defence, the army’s modernisation, investment, respect for soldiers and police officers, and giving veterans their due rights, Plenkovic said.

He was accompanied by Defence Minister Mario Banozic, Veterans Minister Tomo Medved, and Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic.

A parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic, also laid wreaths and honoured all those killed in the Homeland War and all soldiers and police officers.
