Serbia sees new surge in infections as AstraZeneca vaccinations start

Serbia's health authorities on Tuesday started administering AstraZeneca vaccine jabs against coronavirus, while the number of new infections again surpassed 3,000.

Serbia has been registering a daily rise in the number of Covid infections since 16 February, when it registered 1,331 new cases. Since 18 February, the daily number of new cases has exceeded 2,000.

In the last 24 hours, 15 people died from complications caused by Covid-19.

Since the start of the epidemic, 442,853 Serbians have caught the novel coornavirus, and the death toll has climbed to 4,366.

On Sunday, the first shipment of 150,000 doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca was delivered to Serbia. On Monday, another 50,000 doses of Sputnik V and 46,800 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine arrived in Serbia.

An estimated 1.2 million people have been inoculated, and of them more than 420,000 have received both doses of the vaccine.
