Slovenia will stop producing electricity from coal by 2033 at the latest, its government said on Thursday.

This solution is envisaged by the national coal-exit strategy and restructuring of the two provinces with active coal mines, the government said in a press release, adding that the adoption of the strategy meant that those regions now had access to the EU Just Transition Fund, from which Slovenia will soon receive almost €250 million.

From the Sostanj thermal power plant, which uses coal to produce electricity, Slovenia ensures one third of its electricity production, while the rest comes from hydroelectric power plants and the Krsko nuclear power plant.
