Members of the Association of Croatian Travel Agencies (UHPA) say that they registered a 78% fall in revenue in the first seven months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2019, and even record high August numbers cannot offset that.

The key to their recovery and survival lies in job-keeping measures, UHPA Tomislav Fain said on Wednesday.

"The exceptionally good results of the 2021 tourism season make us happy. However, that hasn't essentially impacted the business of agencies whose services are not based on the sun and sea and peak summer season," underscored Fain, adding that data regarding the 78% downturn in agencies' revenue in the first seven months of the year was obtained through a survey of UHPA members.

Similar figures have been confirmed by the State Bureau of Statistics (DZS) according to which the biggest fall in turnover, 83%, was registered by travel agencies, tour operators and other similar services in that regard.

Referring to those statistics as "devastating," Fain underscored that job-keeping grants continue to be essential for agencies that hope they will continue to enjoy the government's support as they have until now.

"If that support is not provided any longer, I'm afraid that the money paid out from the state budget for job-keeping measures until now, has been in vain," he warned.
