Osijek County Court president Zvonko Vrban on Monday confirmed that he had moved to the State Judicial Council (DSV) to impeach two judges, Zvonko Vekic and Darko Kruslin, after photos and videos appeared in the public showing that they socialised with convict Zdravko Mamic.
Last week, Vrban announced that he would request the two judges to explain photographs on a USB memory stick that football mogul Zdravko Mamic had sent to the State Attorney and that were later released in the media.
After receiving depositions from Judges Vekic and Kruslin, Vrban told reporters that he compared their statements to what Mamic said about the photos and video recordings concerned. All that prompted Vrban to instigate disciplinary measures against the two judges from the Osijek Court.
He added that he had requested the DSV to issue disciplinary measures against Vekić and Krušlin and recommended that they be dismissed as judges.
Vrban explained that it is in the remit of the DSV to conduct the impeachment and to make a final decision regarding his motion for their dismissal. He underscored that he could not prejudge the outcome of the proceedings to be conducted by the DSV.
If his motion is upheld by the DSV, the two judges will be dishonourably dismissed and banned from the judicial profession, said Vrban.
After the Supreme Court recently upheld a first instance ruling sentencing football mogul Mamic to six and a half years in prison, speaking at a press conference in Mostar, Mamic accused Osijek County Court Judges Vekic and Kruslin of corruption while calling the president of that court, Judge Zvonko Vrban, a criminal.
Later some photographs possibly incriminating the two judges appeared in the media.
On 18 March, Osijek County Court President Vrban held a news conference to inform the general public that he would launch disciplinary action against the two judges.
Vrban recalled that in previous statements he did not wish to comment on the accusations and allegations that Mamic had made in Mostar, because apart from Mamic’s claims there was no evidence in that regard.
Vrban underscored at that news conference that the “new photographs partly shed a completely different light, as they show judges Zvonko Vekic and Darko Kruslin associating with the convicted felon, Zdravko Mamic.”
“It is not normal or appropriate for judges who decide on the fate of other people … to associate with that sort of people and to come into contact with those persons outside the courthouse where they will decide on their fate,” said Vrban a few days ago.
