EU leaders agreed on a strongly worded statement of condemnation in the wake of the Salisbury nerve agent attack at a European Council dinner in Brussels on Thursday evening (March 22).
The attack, which occurred earlier this month in the British town of Salisbury, Russian military intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter are believed to have been poisoned in a restaurant by a Russian-made nerve agent in a restaurant, with 38 other people affected.
British PM Theresa May attended the meeting and reported that according to its government investigation Russia was behind the attack. In response, the UK had already expelled 23 Russian diplomats from the country.
“All member countries have expressed their solidarity, some very strong statement has been agreed, which is expected to be followed by a diplomacy response, which some countries have already announced” Plenković said.
While some EU countries are considering expelling Russian diplomats or recalling their ambassadors from Moscow, Croatia’s state leadership will discuss what Croatia’s response would be on Monday, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković told HINA news agency.
