The Serbian police will not allow any gathering in the village of Hrtkovici on May 6, Internal Affairs Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Friday responding to statements by ultra-nationalists and their opponents.
“Several political organizations have announced gatherings. No gathering will be allowed in Hrtkovci,” Stefanovic told reporters.
The ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) said it would organize a gathering in that village in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina on May 6. The party’s leader Vojislav Seselj was convicted by a UN Tribunal for war crimes committed against the Croat population of Hrtkovici during the wars in the former Yugoslavia.
The Democratic Party (DS) and League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV) said earlier they would organise what they called a counter-rally in Hrtkovci at the same time as the SRS gathering unless the police bans it.
