Croatia regrets the US' withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement, but, together with our European partners, we remain committed to the implementation of the agreement and expect that Iran will continue fulfilling all obligations under the agreement, the Croatian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The United States President, Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday that the United States will withdraw from the 2015 international agreement with Iran, in order to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb. He also announced that the economic sanctions against Tehran would be implemented.

“This was a terrible, one-sided deal which should never, never have been signed,” Trump said in a speech at the White House, adding that the deal “has not brought peace. And it never will.”

The Foreign Ministry said in a press release that along with the “key security aspects regarding the international non-proliferation architecture as well as regional and European security and stability, the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) has opened up space for the strengthening of the relations with Iran in many other areas, creating opportunities for the development of the economic and trade cooperation to the benefit of the peoples of the EU and Iran. From that perspective, Croatia considers it necessary to make efforts with the goal of the preservation of opportunities, enabled by the agreement, and securing the protection of economic, trade, and business interests.”

“The United States remain our partner and ally. We expect further dialogue with them on this, and other matters of shared interests,” the Ministry concluded.
