After the City of Zadar police reported that, in stopping a van carrying migrants who illegally crossed the border from Bosnia and Herzegovina into Croatia late last night, they have opened fire at the vehicle and wounded two children, the Croatian Centre for Peace Studies (CMS) commented on the incident.
“After closing off all the safe and legal paths for the refugees seeking safety in Europe, and throwing them in the hands of human traffickers, now we started shooting at people on the borders. The Croatian police, suspecting there are people attempting to cross the border, opened fire at a moving van and injured two children,” CMS said.
There were 29 foreign nationals in the vehicle, from Iran and Afghanistan, seven of them with injuries from reckless driving.
The children were taken into the Zadar city hospital, and they are in stable condition.
“How long will the ‘protection’ of borders be more important than children’s lives? Are children really such a threat to national security that we are reaching for our guns?” they added.
Commenting on the incident earlier today, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said he regretted children were wounded, and that he expected the police to continue protecting the borders.
“As far as migrations are concerned, this will be a problem we will deal with for many years to come,” Plenkovic said.
