A Serbian national was arrested on June 4 near the central Croatian town of Slunj, and is suspected of transporting 23 migrants through Croatia with intention of enabling them to illegally leave Croatia and enter another European Union member state, the city of Karlovac Police said in a press release on Wednesday.

The man is suspected of transporting the migrants in inhumane conditions, out of self-interest and for a previously agreed sum, the press release said.

"On Monday, June 4, the police stopped a van with Swedish licence plates and arrested the driver, a 60-year-old Serbian national. He was charged with committing the crime of illegal entry, movement and stay in Croatia, another EU country or a Schengen agreement signatory state,” a press release from the city of Karlovac Police said.

"The suspect was turned over to the Karlovac Chief of Police and will be brought before the competent state attorney’s authority,” the press release said.
