Civil initiative calling for the government to lower the taxes on fuel and bring the prices of a litre of gas to under 9 kuna organised a protest on Wednesday, stopping traffic for an hour in about ten Croatian cities.
The protest lasted from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm local time, and Damir Kristijan Rogina of the initiative said that the protest was not entirely successful, even though more drivers participated than in the earlier protest last week, which lasted only 10 minutes.
“Compared to last time, this time was better. The last time three cars stopped, now it was closer to 30, a three-kilometre line formed and Novi Zagreb was blocked,” he said.
According to a police report, some 2,500 vehicles participated in the first protest.
The police was present at the protests. The Interior Ministry had warned earlier that the police would punish the protesters who obstructed regular traffic.
“The police acted in line with their authority and recorded the drivers and locations to later identify who took part in the gridlock,” the Zagreb Police Department said.
The Department confirmed that charges would be filed against those identified.
